Parker Body and Filling Unit Repair Tools

ITEM #D15: VACUMATIC DIAPHRAGM INSTALLATION TOOL FOR PARKER VACS.  Accomplishes 3 jobs for you when repacing a Vac diaphragm:

1) Serves as a drill guide to protect a hard rubber filling unit lip while drilling a hole in the old crusted-in ball so you can pluck it out.

2) Captivates and pops the ball inside the replacement diapragm into the filling unit using a centered dimple on the end of the shaft

3) The shaft is the right diameter to allow you to roll the new diapragm over on itself so it can be seated on the bevel of the filling unit.

Remember to trim the new diaphagm to a length of 1 1/16" long from the tip of the ball protrusion to the open end before you try to install it - the pen will fill a lot better if you do this.

REPAIRING A VACUMATIC FILLING UNIT

I know this will sound like I'm trying to sell you my own tools. You bet I am! I've been working on pens since 1986 and along the way finding the most sensible tools to use for this application. Tools for removing diaphragm and ball on a vacumatic filling unit

ITEM #AERO DRILL: DRILL FOR BROKEN OFF AEROMETRIC FILL TUBE REMOVAL.  Has a fat shank so for easy jobs you can spin the old stub off while turning the drill by hand. But it can be used in a chuck in a rotary tool also. If you're using this tool while it's being motor driven, go easy and hold it back and cut lightly; don't let it pull itself in and bury itself. You need to control the motion. The drill is the third & 4th item down in the photo below. Feeds and fill tubes are not included with this item but they are available.

ITEM #BUD BURR: PARKER VAC BALL REMOVAL BURR - ALSO GREAT FOR REMOVING SHEARED-OFF CLIP SCREW ("JEWEL") THREADS FROM CLIP BUSHINGS. An ideal tool for putting a pinhole in the ball left over from a deteriorated diaphragm in a Parker Vacumatic. This will leave a hole the correct size for a pick to follow and complete the ball rremoval job. Small enough to fit through the hole that the filling unit has in it. You may want to add liquid (as a lubricant - diluted detergent solutions work well) followed by a little heat to soften things up and avoid damaging the brittle hard rubber socket that some Vacs use. DON'T USE A HEAT GUN!!!  Use this tool in a rotary tool such as a Dremel or flex-shaft grinder in conjunction with a pick. This has a 3/32" shaft. Another helpfull tool for this job is a vacumatic ball drilling shield to protect hard rubber sockets from damage while boring a hole in the ball. We also supply replacement hard rubber ball retainers for Vac diaphragms, as well as complete Vac filling units.

ITEM #GOOEY CUBE: THE MOST NON-SKID, STICKY, SEMI-RIGID SURFACE I'VE FOUND IN MY 28 YEARS OF PEN REPAIR. These are great for turning-out Parker jewels (clip screws). You hold the jewel up against this surface while turning in a counter clockwise direction (after prescribed preparation of the pen cap - click the link below) and the job is a lot simpler than it used to be. Of course, nobody would be able to guarantee a successful jewel removal using any method except maybe drilling, but these things enable me to come close. According to Stuart Hawkinson, renown maker of tooling for our avocation and an enthusiastic Gooey Cube user, "Gooey Cubes are the best thing to come along since Portland Microbrew. As an experienced Parker Cap Repairer, this tool has never failed me." Click to read more...

Remove the single handle, switch it over to the collet on the other side and you're good to go for Oversized and Maxima Vacs. Pens shown are not included.

ITEM #12827: PARKER AEROMETRIC 51 FRONT END DISSASSEMBLY PISTOL GRIP COLLET.  Greatly simplifies the task of taking apart the shell/filling unit on an Aerometric Parker 51. An almost identical design to that used in the Parker factory, this tool incorporates a triple start thread just like that used on the joint between the filling unit and the front end of a fine thread Aerometric 51. THIS TOOL WON'T WORK ON THE LATER, COARSE THREAD AEROMETRICS. The thread configuration in the tool shown here consists of 3 parallel, non-intersecting, 16 TPI threads rather than one and it is very resource intensive to fabricate. The last photo shows all three threads starting in parallel inside the collet. Previous (non-Parker) suppliers of copies of this tool used a single, 48 TPI thread which does not match the Parker thread and can cause damage. This tool is true to form and will not mess up your threads if threads are lined-up before compression of the collet. A must for anyone working on a lot of 51s. This tool greatly simplified my life. The pen shown is not included.

ITEM #HT-G, HT-U, HT-UG: FINE GENERAL PURPOSE PICKs THAT ARE VERY SUITED FOR VACUMATIC FILLING UNIT PELLET REMOVAL.  (Note: you need to use a bud burr - available/listed above - to put a tiny hole in the old pellet before using these tools), We offer three types of these, one with a round cross section (HT-G), one with a triangular cross section (HT-U), and a new version with each of the above tips on an opposite end of the same handle. If you’re new at Vacumatic filling unit pellet removal, you probably want to use the circular cross section.  It’s a little less capable of doing damage than the one with a triangular cross section on the tip.   The triangular one is a little more useful, but only in the right hands.  If you’re not good with tools or just beginning, use the round cross section pick.  The triangular one grips the pellet much better, and the pellet will be more likely to rotate with the pick to ease it out.  But the sharp edges of the triangular cross section can do damage to the hard rubber socket if you’re not real careful. Made from German Stainless steel.

VACUMATIC PELLET REMOVAL SPOONS (NEXT 3 ITEMS BELOW):

Here’s a summary of the spoon widths offered:
HT-A = 0.111” - good for aluminum pellet retainers.
HT-B = 0.076” – good for aluminum pellet retainers.
HT-BC: one side = 0.061” - good for hard rubber pellet retainers & the other side = 0.076” - good for aluminum pellet retainers.
Note that we offer (2) sizes of spoons for aluminum pellet retainers, HT-A & HT-B.

To buy please email Pentooling. Be sure and provide a shipping address that the US Postal Service will accept.

ITEM # HT-BC: VACUMATIC PELLET REMOVER

This tool replaces both HT-B and HT-C. HT-A and HT-B are still available and are listed below. HT-C is no longer available.

This tool (HT-BC) has different sized scoops on each end. It has the smaller size of the old HT-C scoop for use on hard rubber Vacumatic pellet retainers on one side and on the other side it has the larger scoop the same size as the HT-B for use in removing Vac pellets from the larger aluminum pellet retainers.  Both tools have been incorporated into this one tool which replaces them both (HT-B and HT-C). Works great for removing Vac pellets from both types of pellet retainers.   This is a double sided tool with different sized ends on each side. Again, don’t get the idea that you’re just going to reach in there and pluck that ball out while it’s cold, dry, and tight.  You need to follow the ball removing instructions under “REPAIRING A VACUMATIC FILLING UNIT” in the “Tools for Parker Bodies and Filling Units” menu item on the “TOOLS” page (About the 3rd item down). That should help you ease the pellet out without damage to the pellet retainer.  Made from German Stainless steel.

ITEM # HT-A:  A well defined spoon shape that works great for removing the diaphragm pellets from aluminum Vacumatic filling unit sockets. This size is a little tight inside a hard rubber Vacumatic socket. (See HT-BC for that application). The filling unit pellet fits right into the curvature of the spoon. This is a double sided tool with identical ends on each side. Don’t get the idea that you’re just going to reach in there and pluck that pellet out while it’s cold, dry, and tight.  You need to follow the pellet removing instructions under “REPAIRING A VACUMATIC FILLING UNIT” in the “Tools for Parker Bodies and Filling Units” menu item on the “TOOLS” page (About the 3rd item down). That should help you ease the pellet out without damage to the pellet retainer.  Made from German Stainless steel.

ITEM # HT-B:   A tiny curved spatula, slightly smaller in width but much thinner (flatter) than the spoon on HT-A.   This is a double sided tool with identical ends on each side. Works great on Aluminum Vacumatic filling unit socket pellet removal, and  It’s also useable on Hard rubber sockets, but HT-BC has a similar shape and is better suited for the smaller hard rubber sockets and it's less likely to cause breakage in hard rubber.  Again, don’t get the idea that you’re just going to reach in there and pluck that pellet out while it’s cold, dry, and tight.  You need to follow the pellet removing instructions under “REPAIRING A VACUMATIC FILLING UNIT” in the “Tools for Parker Bodies and Filling Units” menu item on the “TOOLS” page (About the 7th item down). That should help you ease the pellet out without damage to the pellet retainer.  Made from German Stainless steel.
