Tools for REPAIRING MONTBLANCS
ITEM #D149P: PISTON REMOVAL TOOL FOR MONTBLANC 146 and 149 AND PELIKAN M800, M900 and M1000. Think of this tool as the Swiss Army Knife for your German big fatty pens. It fits the back ends of the above Montblancs AND Pelikans so you can work on, remove or replace the pistons, filling units or do work inside the barrels.
To use the MB 146/149 end, unscrew the blind cap enough to fit the prongs on the brass ring, screw the blind cap down a little (but not tightly, just snugly), and turn the right hnded threaded piece out.
To use the Pelikan end, unscrew the blind cap enough to fit the thickness of the tool in and unscrew the LEFT HANDED THREAD out.
A few of thee phtos below show two pens in the tool at one time. This was shown just for illustrative purposes; you don't want to do two pens at one time.

ITEM #D149S: TOOL FOR REMOVING THE NIB / COLLAR FROM A MONTBLANC 149. This will work on MB 149s with notches at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock relative to the nib position as shown in the photos below. These are the older 149s; the later ones have the notches at 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock and this tool won't work on the later models.
Note: Some 149s (pre-1990) don't use a nib orientation registration system consisting of a flat spot on the end of the sleeve that the nib/feed fit into. So your 149 may not have the front slots at 12:00 and 6:00. If it doesn't, this tool won't work on it unless you can get your 149 apart and align the nib, feed and sleeve so the slots are at 12:00 and 6:00 when putting it back together. And if you are having a 149 worked on by someone else, request that they align the slots to the 12:00 and 6:00 positions.

For Montblanc, keep in mind that the Writer's Series, except for the Hemingway and the Dumas, are based on the 146, front and back of the pen; they will use the same tools. The Hemingway and Dumas are similarly based on the149.

Piston removal from a 146 or 149 Montblanc:
Only one tool is required to remove a piston filling unit; two are shown for clarity. Both the 149 and the 146 use this same tool (MB-1). To use, unscrew the blind cap enought to fit the tool's prongs on top of the slots in the filling unit. Keep pressure on the tool after gently fitting the prongs into the slots to keep the prongs engaged in the slots while turning the piston filling unit out in a counter clockwise direction.
NOTE: It is highly advisable, before disassembling almost any pen, to:
1) Use an ultrasonic cleaner to loosen up and lubricate the screwed together parts.
2) Use mild heat on the parts being disassembled.
3) BE PATIENT, AS OSMAN SAYS.
The difference between the 149 slot configuration is: On the older pens (1950 to 2013), the slots are at 12:00 and 6:00. On the newer ones (2013 to now), the slots are closer to 4:00 & and 8:00. In 2013 they produced both slot configurations on the 149s.
Above: Use of the MB-1 to remove a piston filling unit from a 149 or a 146.
Below: Use of an MB-2 through MB-7 to remove a nib. Note that there is a bit of red lacquer on the business end of the nib tools for padding to avoid scratching the gold. Again, 2 tools are shown for clarity; only 1 is required for a specified pen:
Below:
There are 2 different types of nib removal jobs for the MB 146; one (using MB-4) is for removing nibs from 2 unit barrels where the section comes off the barrel and the other (MB-5) is for barrels and sections that are one piece. The photos below show the 2 unit barrel:
