Parker Cap Repair Tools

ITEM #51CAPTOOL: THIS TOOL WILL ALLOW YOU TO REPAIR DENTS AND DINGS IN 51 CAPS BY:

1) REMOVING THE 5 WINDOW CLUTCH FROM A STANDARD SIZED 51 SO YOU CAN ALSO PUSH THE INNER CAP OUT AND END UP WITH AN EMPTY CAP SHELL. This tool can also be used on the early, longer caps for 61s that have 5 window clutches; use the 51 Demi clutch attachment in the next item listing for this.

2) PROVIDING A MANDREL THAT MATCHES THE SHAPE OF THE INSIDE OF A STANDARD SIZE 51 CAP AND A STEEL ROLLER THAT ARE USED TO SMOOTH OUT DENTS AND DINGS IN THE GOLD FILLED, 14k GOLD, OR SILVER CAPS. We also carry mandrels for Parker 51 Demis, 51 pencils (both twist & cap actuated), 61s, and 75s. You'll find these listed below.

(Note: A different clutch insert & mandrel are required for Demis - and the Demi clutch remover will also work on early 61 clutches.)

You need to use a brass bristled brush (AVAILABLE BELOW; "51BRUSH") to clean out any dirt or residue from the inside of the cap so the roller does not carry the lumps through to the outside, as the mandrel will press their shapes out to the surface. Some 51 inner caps will also leave a "Bathtub Ring" of crud caked up where the inner cap ended and this must be scrubbed out with the brass brush or at times even filed smooth with a curved file.

You then insert the mandrel into the cap and roll the dents out with a supplied roller. You can also use a small rawhide mallet to get sharper dings out. DO NOT EVER USE A METAL HAMMER unless you're out to create some kind of hammered piece of "artwork".

This is one of the neatest tools I've ever used. You usually can't tell a cap had dents or dings in it when you're done using this.

ITEM #D23: PARKER PENCIL CAP TOOL.  The tip of this tool is ground to 4 sharp edges, to enable you to grip the soft aluminum slug at the inside tip of the cap and unscrew it. This tool comes in VERY handy when taking apart parker pencil caps on Vacs, 51s, and others that have aluminum or brass slugs in the top of the cap, usually on top of a brass cap insert. The sharp corners of the tip of this tool grab onto the hole in the underside of that slug (shown in the photos) and are a great aid in removing the clip screw (jewel) and exposing the slot under the jewel so you can get at the bushing that holds the clip on. You will still need a Gooey Cube or some non-skid padding on the jewel side to give you a little friction there to help turn the jewel out.

Dale found a rusty version of this in a load of surplus tools from the Janesville plant. He kept it in his work bench for a year or so before he figured out what it was for. It's been an indispensable tool ever since, so we had it manufactured so we can release this to the pen community..

ITEM #51BRUSH: USE THIS BRASS BRUSH TO SCRUB-OUT THE INSIDE OF A 51 CAP BEFORE SHOVING A MANDREL INTO IT AND RUBBING OUT THE DENTS.  If you don't scrub the inside of the cap out real well, any chunk of hard debris inside there will become a feature of the outside surface after rubbing. 51 inner caps can leave a "Bathtub Ring" where they end. This is composed of either corrosion or crystalized crud which can mess up your repair job. If you DO get a surface irregularity transferred to the outside surface, find the chunk under it and clean it out with this brush or even a curved riffler file if it's stuck onto the inside of the cap strongly.

ITEM #51 DEB CLUTCH GRIP: UNSCREW THE STANDARD SIZED CLUTCH FITTING FROM THE "T" HANDLE OF THE TOOL ABOVE AND SCREW THIS ONE ON  to change the tool over for removing Deb clutches. The 5 window Deb clutch is a smaller diameter and length than the Standard 51 clutch. Remember, when putting the clutch back in, the end with the slit goes into the cap first.

ITEM #61 MANDREL: PARKER 61 CAP MANDREL; AN EXACT FIT TO THE INSIDE OF A PARKER 61 FOUNTAIN PEN CAP. ITEM #VP MANDREL: PARKER VP CAP MANDREL . This mandrel is the same shape as the inside of a Parker VP fountain pen cap and can be used with a 1/2" diameter steel roller, a rawhide hammer, or a plastic /rubber hammer to remove most dents from a VP cap, gold or stainless.

ITEM #RAWHIDE: THIS RAWHIDE MALLET IS A GREAT COMPLEMENT TO THE 51 CAP DENT REMOVER (ABOVE). While the cap has the mandrel in it, besides rolling the dents out, they can be gently hammered out with this soft but firm mallet. The head is 1 1/2" diameter X 2 7/8" long. The handle is 8" long.

ITEM #RAWHIDE SMALL: THIS RAWHIDE MALLET IS A GREAT COMPLEMENT TO THE 51 CAP DENT REMOVER (ABOVE), in case the one above is larger than you like.  While the cap has the mandrel in it, besides rolling the dents out, they can be gently hammered out with this soft but firm mallet. The head is 1" diameter X 2" long. The handle is 6 1/2" long.

ITEM #BUD BURR: PARKER VAC BALL REMOVAL BURR - ALSO GREAT FOR REMOVING SHEARED-OFF CLIP SCREW ("JEWEL") THREADS FROM CLIP BUSHINGS. An ideal tool for putting a pinhole in the ball left over from a deteriorated diaphragm in a Parker Vacumatic. This will leave a hole the correct size for a pick to follow and complete the ball rremoval job. Small enough to fit through the hole that the filling unit has in it. You may want to add liquid (as a lubricant - diluted detergent solutions work well) followed by a little heat to soften things up and avoid damaging the brittle hard rubber socket that some Vacs use. DON'T USE A HEAT GUN!!!  Use this tool in a rotary tool such as a Dremel or flex-shaft grinder in conjunction with a pick. This has a 3/32" shaft. Another helpfull tool for this job is a vacumatic ball drilling shield to protect hard rubber sockets from damage while boring a hole in the ball. We also supply replacement hard rubber ball retainers for Vac diaphragms, as well as complete Vac filling units.

ITEM #LADYTAP: PARKER LADY DUOFOLD CAP TAP.  For straightening-out the female threads in the caps of Lady Duofolds. From the surplus tooling in the Janesville Parker factory when they shut it down. Engraved with Parker tool # 8872. This tool is also marked with the designation "N". I have two versions, one with no handle that is marked with "8872" and "N", and one with a black hard rubber handle, made in Parker's shop. Specify which version you want with your order.

ITEM #13732: PARKER CAP BUSHING CENTER PIN SCREW DRIVER/WRENCH.  This is another duplication of an original Parker tool crib wrench that is guaranteed to inprove your quality of life. This will self center and safely remove (without damaging the clip ring) the bushing that holds the clip onto the cap of Parker fountain pens (Vacs & 51s), ballpoints, and some pencils that have jewels (Clip screws) and bushings holding them together. Like the Parker original, it has a spring-loaded, retracting center pin to fit into the hole left after the clip screw (jewel) is removed. AND if the plastic threaded shaft from the clip screw / jewel has broken off inside the bushing, the spring action of the aligning center pin causes it to retract so you can still unscrew the bushing. A pleasure to use, especially after you've kept mis-placing that exact sized, still square edged screw driver that would fit some of the Parker bushings you encounter (but it would still scrape some of the gold off of the clip ring).

ITEM #LGE VAC JEWEL TAP: A TAP FOR STRAIGHTENING OUT THE THREADS IN THE CLIP BUSHING IN THE CAP OF A PARKER VACUMATIC / 51 AFTER YOU'VE REMOVED THE BROKEN-OFF PLASTIC CLIP SCREW ("JEWEL") FROM THE BUSHING.  Clip screws sometimes shear off when you're trying to remove them when you need to get at the clip bushing slot to remove the clip. You then have to use a bud burr and/or a pick to break-up the threaded part of the clip screw ("Jewel") that remains stuck in the clip bushing so you can screw a replacement clip screw into the bushing. After that, the threads are usually boogered-up, preventing an easy insertion of the replacement clip screw ("Jewel"). This tap will solve that problem for the second smallest size of clip screws (both of the smaller 2 sizes frequently shear off). This larger of the two smaller sizes (#4) is more often used on pre-51 Vacs, but some 51s use this size also. The pre-51 Vacs also use some much larger thread sizes, but those sizes are less likely to shear off. That's why I offer the smaller 2 sizes here (see next item also). To determine which size you need, this larger one is for clip screws ("Jewels") with a thread O.D. of approx. .118". if you don't have a micrometer, try comparing the thread size to a known drill bit size.

FOR COMPARISON, HERE ARE BOTH SIZES AVAILABLE

ITEM #SML VAC JEWEL TAP: THIS COMPLEMENTS THE ITEM ABOVE and is USED FOR THE SMALLER CLIP SCREW ("JEWEL") THREAD SIZE (#3) WITH AN O.D. OF APPROX. .O93". This is the more common size used on 51s. Some other Vacs , pencils, and ballpoints use this size also.

Note: There is a thread pitch (48 threads per inch) this same diameter used rarely on Parker clip screws. This is very seldom found, but if you determine your jewel (Clip Screw) thread is 48 threads/inch, these are available upon request for $14 ea - its an uncommon thread.

ITEM #BUSHING TAP: BOTTOMING TAP FOR CHASING THE THREADS THAT THE CLIPSCREWS or BUSHINGS ENTER WHEN BEING SCREWED INTO THE BLIND HOLE ON TOP OF THE CAP OR THE BOTTOM OF THE BLIND CAP ON A PARKER VAC.  This will make it easier and smoother to get bushings and fat clip screws into your Vacumatic cap or blind cap, especially if you're screwing in a clipscrew without a bushing and thus no slot to put a wrench or a screw driver into.

ITEM #MC: PARKER CAP ACTUATED BALLPOINT CLICKER / CAP ARBOR.  Locks the clicker mechanism in a Parker cap actuated ballpoint from the open end of the cap so you can apply other tools on the outside to remove the jewel ("Clip Screw" in Parker repair manual parlance) and then the bushing, which holds the clip, cap shell, and internal mechanism all together. At this point you can work dents out of the cap or replace the clicker mechanism or clip, or whatever else your need may be with the cap disassembled. This works for all the vintage Parker cap actuated BPs I've tried it with; 51, 45, 61, etc. The two slots in the tool lock-up with two tabs in the clicker ratchet mechanism so you can apply torque to unscrew things holding the cap together using other tools like Gooey cubes and item #13732.

Mike Conway, a Parker employee, was going around the plant in Janesville collecting the old one-way (to tighten) machine ends for putting caps together and started putting handles on them for use in repair. He realized that THIS design - what's pictured below - was "what was needed" as it operates in both directions (to tighten and to loosen), so he made a bunch of these, one of which I glommed onto. (He said it was OK for me to make these, by the way) - Thus the part # designation, "MC".

ITEM #8057: PARKER 51 FOUNTAIN PEN CAP ARBOR.  Use this tool to lock onto the inside of the inner cap on a Parker 51 fountain pen so you can go to the other (outside) and remove the jewel ("Clip screw, really) and bushing using other tools (Gooey cubes and item #13732) while applying torque through the large, comfortable handle on this tool. This is a duplicate of Parker repair tool #8057.

ITEM #GOOEY CUBE: THE MOST NON-SKID, SEMI-RIGID SURFACE I'VE FOUND IN MY 27 YEARS OF PEN REPAIR. These are great for turning-out Parker jewels (clip screws). You hold the jewel up against this surface while turning in a counter clockwise direction (after prescribed preparation of the pen cap - click the link below) and the job is a lot simpler than it used to be. Of course, nobody would be able to guarantee a successful jewel removal 100% of the time using any method except maybe drilling, but these things enable me to come closer than any other method. And don't worry, they work well even though they seem dry and are not wet or soft. According to Stuart Hawkinson, renown maker of tooling for our avocation and an enthusiastic Gooey Cube user, "Gooey Cubes are the best thing to come along since Portland Microbrew. GOOEY CUBES STICKING TO EACH OTHER (BELOW)

ITEM #BLUE DIAMOND: PARKER BLUE DIAMOND PAINT.  Restore the paint on blue diamonds with this oil based enamel. Be advised that many parker pens DID leave the factory with un-painted blue diamonds on clips. But if you have damaged or chipped paint and want to repair the blue diamond on your clip, or, in the case of first year desk pens, on the barrels, this will do a nice job. This oil based paint will cure to a tenacious, rubbery coating. I apply it with a toothpick, let it "skin-over" for about 12 hours, and then trim it using a scraping motion while the paint is still soft. ITEM #D17: PARKER 51 HOOD GRABBER TOOL. I've improved on the design of a handy tool I initially found a lot of in surplus from the Parker tool crib in Janesville. I've changed the material they are made of to a stickier plastic than the originals for a better non-skid grip. They work great for using your hands to get a good grip on the front end of a Parker 51 (and a lot of other pens) for the purpose of disassembly. It's made just the right size for this purpose.
